What is a Pre-Placement Physical Exam?

A pre-placement physical exam is often required by employers before an offer is extended to a job applicant. These exams help ensure that a candidate has the physical ability to perform a job safely and without risk of injury.

The term “pre-placement” exam is used for a reason. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that an employer cannot perform a physical exam before a candidate is offered a position and must be conducted before an employee’s first day at work. In addition, to avoid discrimination, the law requires that all applicants for the job undergo a physical exam.

Types of pre-placement physical exams include:

  • Physical ability (including the ability to perform certain functions required for the position, such as lifting or aerobic activity)
  • Vital function evaluation (heart, vision, hearing, etc.)
  • Psychological and cognitive screening
  • Strength, stamina, and physical endurance
  • Drug and alcohol screening (especially if the position requires the operation of heavy equipment or machinery)

Benefits of Pre-Placement Physical Exams

By requiring a pre-placement physical exam, employers are assured that a job candidate does not have physical limitations or an existing medical condition that would prevent them from performing a job.

More importantly, a pre-placement exam helps employers make informed, objective decisions about hiring based on an applicant’s physical and behavioral health. Employers can also monitor employee health over time to ensure they have the best-performing team.

Pre-placement physical exams benefit employees by ensuring they are the right match for the job, will remain satisfied in the role, and reduce the chance of injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pre-placement physical exam?

A pre-placement physical is performed before an offer is extended to a job candidate.

A physical pre-placement exam is an important evaluation process used by employers to determine if a job applicant is physically and/or mentally fit to complete the tasks required by a position.

Depending on the nature of the work, the medical examiner will evaluate a candidate’s overall health and wellness so that employers can make more informed hiring decisions.

What happens in a pre-work physical?

A pre-work physical exam is conducted by a medical professional. During the assessment, the professional will evaluate an employee’s:

  • Physical abilities (vision, hearing, etc.)
  • Medical history and lifestyle
  • Strength and stamina (especially if the position involves operating heavy equipment or machinery)
  • Mental and behavioral health (such as the ability to handle the psychological pressures of the job)
  • Functional limitations
  • Drug and alcohol use

A job applicant may also be asked to show or describe how they would perform specific job functions.

What happens if a job applicant fails a pre-placement physical exam?

If a job candidate fails a pre-placement physical exam an employer is legally permitted to withdraw the contingent or conditional job offer. However, the exam results may not be used to discriminate against the candidate/employee.

Their medical records and history become confidential and are protected as Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personal Identifying Information (PII).
