What is a DOT Physical Exam?

A DOT physical exam is used to screen CMV drivers, also known as safety-sensitive employees, to determine if they are healthy enough to perform their roles. DOT medical exams are mandated by the FMCSA and help keep the nation’s roads safe. A driver must participate in a physical to maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL). The exam is valid for 24 months.

DOT physicals are performed by a medical examiner who checks:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Blood pressure and heart rate

And performs:

  • Urinalysis
  • Physical examination (eyes, skin, general appearance, lung and chest function, neurological indicators, limbs, etc.)

The examiner also inquiries about the employee’s medical history, tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, and current health problems. A sleep apnea study may be ordered.

Benefits of Regular DOT Physical Exams

Employers are required to conduct regular DOT physical examinations to ensure that healthy employees can continue to work and maintain compliance with FMCSA rules.

DOT physicals are especially important in detecting chronic conditions that can impede an individual’s ability to perform work-related tasks. They also provide a medical baseline that is used to track an employee’s health or injuries over time.

Periodic CMV driver screening also lowers risks and saves money by reducing accidents and absences.
