What is DOT Alcohol Testing?
DOT alcohol testing ensures an alcohol-free transportation industry.
DOT alcohol rules require that employers implement a testing program based on certain employees’ job functions. Non-compliance with DOT rules can result in a company failing a DOT audit and stiff financial penalties.
The rules apply to DOT-regulated agencies, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Transit Authority (FTA), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), U.S. Coast Guard, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
If the test returns a positive (0.02% BAC or higher) a confirmatory test is conducted. A CDL driver who tests within this range must be removed from service for 24 hours. Employees who test 0.04% BAC or higher must be evaluated by a substance abuse professional.

Benefits of DOT Alcohol Testing
DOT alcohol tests save lives and prevent workplace injuries.
When a DOT alcohol test identifies an employee with a substance abuse issue, employers can help facilitate treatment, reduce employer liability, and increase productivity by limiting employee absences. Pre-employment screening also ensures employers in the transportation industry can be sure they’re making the right hire.
